I do a lot of driving in Illinois because of my job; this week was no exception. In some rural areas along the interstates, land owners have posted a series of signs with some message they’re trying to promote. Many of these signs are promoting biodiesel, but the other group that is often seen is an anti-gun control group whose signs very often irritate me- and not only because the phrase that makes up their website address is grammatically incorrect (and, while you may be interested in what it is, I refuse to post so as not to give them any kind of traffic or referrals).
On my drive to Springfield on Wednesday, however, there was a new one from this group that was just confusing to me; it said:
“Gun control
Is race control
Not crime control
And it’s un-American”
Now, I fancy myself a relatively intelligent person, and I just couldn’t quite figure out exactly what they were getting at. I get the basic message, but I am still having a hard time with the “race control” part. I’ve asked two people I consider to be very intelligent what their take is, and neither one of them could quite figure it out. I think I mostly can’t decide if I should be mildly offended by these signs or wildly offended.
Thoughts?
I’m so glad you posted this. I saw the same signs on a recent road trip to Peoria, and I was just as puzzled as you are. I’ve forgotten what the grammatically incorrect website is, but have you searched there for clues? Maybe somebody will comment here with some brilliant insights…
Love the new theme, btw!
Hmm, try driving through Nebraska. Apparently the right to life people decided the best way to get their message across was to liter backroads Nebraska will poorly made signs. I never wanted to have an abortion as badly as I did after the time we road tripped 6 hours from Omaha to Valentine.
All I wanted was to post a reply and I somehow ended up with my own blog. It’s just that kind of a day….
